Manual Therapy

What is manual therapy?

Manual therapy techniques include numerous hands-on techniques – everything from mobilizations to myofascial release to Muscle Energy Techniques (MET) which alleviate pain and improve mobility. Mobilizations are used to move joints to improve mobility and reduce pain.

Myofascial release reduces restrictions in the fascia which surround muscle and soft tissue mobilization reduces restrictions in the muscle. Both of these hands-on techniques can reduce pain, improve mobility and increase circulation.

Carousel therapists also use instrument-assisted soft tissue mobilization to reduce muscular restrictions by use of a tool. Cupping may also be implemented into your treatments which has been used for hundreds of years in Chinese medicine. Cupping involves a silicone or plastic cup with suction to reduce restrictions and improve circulation to soft tissue structures that are inflamed or undergone trauma. Cupping can be used in combination with stretching and other exercises to facilitate improved soft tissue mobility.

When is manual therapy used?

Manual therapy is used to treat many different conditions in a variety of orthopedic and neurologic conditions too numerous to list. At Carousel Physical Therapy our therapists are all trained in manual therapy techniques and use manual intervention regularly when treating our patients.
